LUCY
BERGAMINI
An
extraordinary Vermont glass artist, is fifth generation self-employed
entrepreneur and proud of her lineage. Bergamini studied at the California
College of Arts and Crafts and in 1983, opened Vitriesse Glass, her glass studio
and successful wholesale/retail business.
"I always
excelled at all arts and crafts for as long as I can remember, and glass posed
to be the one field with the most challenge which is the reason I chose to make
it my life's work."
Born in
Connecticut, Bergamini traveled with her family extensively as a child due to
her father's occupation and was exposed to every art form imaginable. She
regularly visited museums with her parents throughout Europe and relished the
experience. Artists whose work Bergamini identifies with is Picasso, Vasily
Kandinsky and Paul Klee.
Bergamini's blown forms are fluid, sculptural and timeless. Her latticino
vessels are an intricate process of blowing, pulling and twisting glass rods or
canes with multiple colors entwined around each other. The canes are then joined
and shaped into their desired form resulting in exquisite depth and
luminescence. In addition to her vessel forms, Bergamini developed a line of
glass beads using a similar process of pulling cane. The canes are cut into
beads, fire polished into brilliant gems which are then assembled to create her
lovely jewelry line.
Lucy
Bergamini has taken glass blowing to new heights with her innovative processes.
She is honored, by having her
work in
the Cooper-Hewitt Museum's permanent collection, in addition to others.
